 2022 Preview

Central finished the 2021 season with a disappointing 2-7 record. Last year Central finished sixth in Class 2A region three with a 1-5 region record and failed to qualify for the playoffs.

The Cougars last playoff victory came during the 2000 season. They would love to break through this year with a post season win.

Central was inconsistent offensively last year and they need some improvement if the Cougars want to be competitive. They only averaged 15.1 points a game.

Central struggled on the defensive side of the football last year. The defense found little success in stopping opposing offenses as they gave up an average of 43.7 points a game.

The Cougars would prefer to forget the past two seasons as they have finished with a 4-12 record. Since 2010, the Central football program has struggled with a record of 24-93.

Over the past 25 seasons, Central has not won much with a record of 68-182. Their 27.0% winning percentage ranks 55th in Class 2A and 362nd in the AHSAA.

The Cougars will be under the direction of new head football coach Shundell Russaw as they enter the 2022 season.  Coach Russaw took over at Central in July after working at Benjamin Russell the past two seasons.

Once again the Cougars will be rebuilding under their fifth head football coach in the last nine seasons.

The Central Cougars will play in Class 2A region four during the 2022 season. Following realignment, the Cougars remain in 2A but move from region three over to region four. The Cougars have one of the toughest schedules in Class 2A. Their opponents had a combined record of 54-46 last season. That ranks 9th in Class 2A and 102nd in the AHSAA.

This season, the Cougars will be a long shot for one of the four playoff spots in region four.

The Cougars open the 2022 season at home against non-region opponent Verbena on Friday, August 19 at Central Stadium. Last year the Verbena Red Devils finished with an overall record of 4-6 and in sixth place in Class 1A region four.

Central and Verbena have met a total of 4 times on the football field. The Cougars have a 1-3-0 record against the Red Devils. They last met in 2021 with Verbena winning by a score of 36-8.
